Die CART-Saison 1991 war die 13. Saison der CART-Rennserie und die 70. Meisterschaftssaison im US-amerikanischen Formelsport.
Hintergrund
Die Saison 1991 begann am 17. März in Surfers Paradise und endete nach 17 Rennen am 20. Oktober auf dem Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey.
Das Team A. J. Foyt Enterprises hatte das erste Rennen der Saison in Australien aus finanziellen Gründen ausgelassen.
Motorenlieferant Chevrolet erweiterte sein Motorprogramm und belieferte 1991 neu die Teams Bettenhausen Motorsports, Dick Simon Racing und Hall/VDS Racing.
Das Team Truesports baute zum ersten Mal ein eigenes Chassis für die CART-Serie und verwendete neu einen Judd-Motor.
Saisonverlauf
Zum vierten Mal in seiner Karriere gewann Rick Mears das Indianapolis 500 mit einem Auto des Teams Penske.
Insgesamt stand Michael Andretti acht Mal auf der Pole-Position und gewann acht Rennen. Da Bobby Rahal elf Podiumsplätze und 13 Platzierungen in der besten zehn Rängen erreichte aber nur zwei Rennen gewann, konnte er trotzdem bis zum Saisonfinale mit Andretti um den Fahrer-Meistertitel kämpfen. Nach technischem Defekt von Rahal in Laguna Seca stand Andretti als Meister fest.
Den Titel „Rookie of the Year“ ging an Michael Andrettis Bruder Jeff Andretti, der in der Fahrer-Meisterschaft auf den 15. Platz kam.
Bester Europäer in der Serie war Arie Luyendyk aus den Niederlanden mit dem sechsten Rang in der Meisterschaft. Er gewann zwei Rennen und stand insgesamt fünf Mal auf dem Siegerpodest.
