Die CART-Saison 1988 war die 10. Saison der CART-Rennserie und die 67. Meisterschaftssaison im US-amerikanischen Formelsport.
Hintergrund
Die Saison 1988 begann am 10. April in Phoenix und endete nach 16 Rennen am 6. November in Miami.
Der Chevrolet-Indy-V8-Motor, gebaut von Ilmor, dominierte die Saison. Chevrolet angetriebene Autos gewannen von den 15 Meisterschaftsläufen, die zur Fahrer-Meisterschaft zählten, deren 14 Rennen und erreichten alle 15 Pole-Positions. Außerdem gewann das Triebwerk zum ersten Mal das Indianapolis-500-Rennen von der Pole-Position.
Al Unser jr. verließ das Team Doug Shierson Racing nach einer sieglosen Saison 1987 und kehrte zu Galles Racing zurück.
Saisonverlauf
Der US-Amerikaner und Ex-Formel-1-Pilot Danny Sullivan gewann mit dem Team Penske die Fahrer-Meisterschaft. Neun Mal startete Sullivan aus der Pole-Position, siegte bei vier Rennen und platzierte sich 11 Mal in den besten fünf Plätzen der Ranglisten. Al Unser jr. und Bobby Rahal waren die ersten Verfolger von Sullivan, die Führung in der Meisterschaft wechselte öfters während der Saison. Am Ende war Sullivan mit 33 Punkten Vorsprung vor Unser jr. und Rahal zuoberst in der Tabelle.
Rick Mears gewann mit dem Team Penske zum dritten Mal das Indianapolis 500.
Der Italiener Teo Fabi bestritt die Saison im Team von Porsche. Zwei siebte Ränge waren seine besten Resultate, in der Fahrer-Meisterschaft belegte er den 10. Platz.
Den Titel „Rookie of the Year“ ging an den Kanadier John Jones, er wurde 11. in der Meisterschaft.
