Bis zur landesweiten Neuordnung der französischen Kantone im März 2015 gehörten zum Kanton Rioz die 27 Gemeinden Aulx-lès-Cromary, Boulot, Boult, Bussières, Buthiers, Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux, Chaux-la-Lotière, Cirey, Cordonnet, Cromary, Fondremand, Hyet, La Malachère, Maizières, Montarlot-lès-Rioz, Neuvelle-lès-Cromary, Pennesières, Perrouse, Quenoche, Recologne-lès-Rioz, Rioz, Sorans-lès-Breurey, Traitiéfontaine, Trésilley, Vandelans, Villers-Bouton und Voray-sur-l’Ognon. Sein Zuschnitt entsprach einer Fläche von 234,65 km2. Er besaß vor 2015 einen anderen INSEE-Code als heute, nämlich 7021.
