Richard Brookes

Richard Brookes (* 1721; † 1763) war ein englischer Arzt und Autor von Kompilationen und Übersetzungen von Literatur über Medizin, Chirurgie, Naturgeschichte und Geographie, von denen die meisten mehrere Auflagen erlebten.

Brookes war eine Zeit lang Landarzt in Surrey^[1] Einige Zeit vor 1762 hatte er sowohl Amerika als auch Afrika bereist.

• The General Gazetteer; or, Compendious Geographical Dictionary^[2] (1762) füllte eine Marktlücke und erlebte viele Auflagen, bis hin zu der von Alexander George Findlay im späteren neunzehnten Jahrhundert.
• History of the most remarkable Pestilential Distempers, printed for A. Corbett ... and J. Roberts, London 1721.

• The Natural History of Chocolate (1724), aus der französischen Histoire Naturelle du Cacao et du Sucre (1719) von Quelus (de Chélus), 2. Auflage 1730
• Description de la Chine et de la Tartarie chinoise von Jean-Baptiste Du Halde vom Französischen ins Englische. In erster Auflage erschienen 1736 in London mit dem Titel "The General History of China. Containing A Geographical, Historical, hronolocical, Political and Physical Description of the Empire of China, Chinese-Tartary, Corea and Thibet. Including an extract and particular account of their Customers, Manners, Ceremonies, Relgion, Arts and Sciences. The whole adorn't with curious maps, and variety of copper-plates. Done from the french P. du Halde.". Auch als Reprint im Jahr 1739 gedruckt. Die dritte korrigierte Auflage erschien 1741 in London.
