Der Juno Award für das Indigenous Music Album of the Year ist ein jährlich von der Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences vergebener Musikpreis. Ausgezeichnet wird das beste Album eines indigenen Künstlers. Gemeint sind damit die kanadischen Ureinwohner. Der Award wurde ehemals auch als Best Music of Aboriginal Canada Recording (1994–2002), Aboriginal Recording of the Year (2003–2009) und Aboriginal Album of the Year (2010–2016) vergeben.[1]

Kontroverse

Der Begriff ist nicht ganz wertfrei und nicht unumstritten. Künstler dieses Genres können zwar auch für andere Kategorien nominiert werden, dennoch lehnen viele Künstler eine Nominierung in diesem Genre ab. Insbesondere A Tribe Called Red wollen ihre Musik nur in breiteren Kategorien nominiert wissen.

Bereits in seinem ersten Jahr wurde die Verleihung von einem Skandal überschattet. Der Nominierten Sazacha Red Sky wurde kulturelle Aneignung unterstellt.[2] Der von ihr nominierte Song The Prayer Song gilt als Heiligtum der Tsleil-Waututh Nation. Sazacha Red Sky war mit Chief Dan George befreundet und gab später an, von ihm vor seinem Tod adoptiert worden zu sein. Dies bestreitet jedoch Georges Sohn Leonard, der ihr damit auch das Recht absprach, den Song aufzunehmen.[2] Leonard versuchte per Gerichtsverfahren die Verleihung des Preises an sich zu stoppen.[3] Schließlich kam es jedoch zu einem Kompromiss, so dass statt des Songs das dazugehörige Album nominiert wurde.[4]

Auch in letzter Zeit werden Stimmen laut, dass die Fortführung der Kategorie dafür Sorge, dass diese marginalisiert und ghettoisiert werde.[5]
